Please vote on the poll! Only poll votes will count.
And please explain your votes.
The assignment was to capture the essence
of a rapper in a sig. Everyone did a great job
overall and it was hard to decide who gets
the 5 bonus votes for the best concept. So
I've decided to give 1 extra vote to everyone
who explained their piece. That's Mariah, Hosea,
ShimbatZOO!, Celz, Brandon Cee, and Ex. Machina.
Only reason I am only giving out 1 vote is because
I didn't say to explain from the beginning. So I had
to compromise between rewarding your effort and
excellence, and being fair to the other members.
Sorry about that. Next round we'll do things better.
Note to entrants: you may vote for your own entry
if you really feel that yours is the best.
Mariah
Mine describes Talib Kweli because he, as a rapper, is very artistic, abstract and lyrical when he rhymes, so I made just that with the vecotr'd background...plus he talks about the streets and his childhood in the city...hence the text, "I Run This City" and then obviously his name.
Hosea
my monch sig is perfect for monch! got the little monchi chi idol on there! monch is weird! intelligent, and a bunch of other things mixed into one god! monch once said "my spine allows me to suck my own cock" and then in another song in 1991 he talked about global warming, before anyone else was even onto it, monch is a time traveler! cant box monch in
ShimbatZOO!
For mine, I basically used black and white to represent death and on the left was his wild side and on the right has blood squirting out his head from the gunshot to empty blackness/quietness and death... Also went for like the back in the day policital movement type of poster feel.

I attempted to capture forward movement while keeping the composition in it strong, hence why he moves to the right, due to typical 'reading' patterns. The eyes naturally move from left to right.
I feel Common's a progressive artist, he writes about things that need to be addressed and he does it with punch and meaning, yet with subtle and artistic style. That's where my image was born, I knew I had to show something to represent his forward thinking.
My colours were to indicate depth, power and insight, I find purple's quite a sophisticated colour so it was the main pallette to use.
The background is a pic of Chicago, his home town. I found it in a quick search on google. I flipped it up a bit but I think it's back to it's original place after I flipped the whole canvas before finalising.
The purple aura is to define his presence and to add to the motion that I created with the montage of Common himself, I went for a white wisp but quickly turned it into more of a 'stream' because it fit his character better.
Also, the 'chalk line' where his motion begins is supposed to show that he knows where he's coming from, and he leaves a mark wherever he decides to 'preach' before moving on, if you like.

I feel like Pharell is one of the brightest musicians in the hip-hop industry today, hence the bright colors. I also think that, he is very unique and the dude is just everywhere, from producing to rapping to writing lyrics to whatever else, he's a bunch of shit and he's good at it all, so I made a sig that has a lot of filters and brush styles to fit that, showing that he can do anything pretty much. I used the pen tool for the rings around him because he uses the pen a lot and he's an artitst with it, no matter what he uses it for, so I tried to incorporate something he has a passion for into my composition as well. I love it, hope you enjoy it.
Ex.Machina.
Represents them with the funky colors, old school font, simple scheme but still looks fresh.
